The alarm went off at 4 am this morning, waking my fiancee and I. In a sleep induced fog, I began my routine of finding Diet Dew and realized that after months of training it was time for my first 1/2 marathon. Several friends have ran shorter and longer races, but I realized (once the caffeine hit me) that today was go day. None of this would have been possible without a great team: Shelly (without a doubt my greatest inspiration), Dr. Kaminski at Kaminski Pain and Performance, John Byrne, John DeDoncker, and Sonia and Rick Berg (who couldn't register as it was sold out. They were secretly hoping we wouldn't run )
17,000 of us began the race on a perfect day. By mile number 6 through about 7.5, I experienced pretty bad knee pain. Shelly helped me run through it. It was gone by mile 9. Another thing that kept me going was a tattoo that I had saying that I can do anything as Christ will give me the strength.
By mile 12, Shelly ran out of gas and I wound up encouraging her to the finish line. I don't know how the race organizers do this, but they seem to make the last mile seem like about 10 miles. Wow. Then we were done. The cheering crowds along the way, the supporters, vendors, and staff of the Chicago Rock and Roll Half Marathon were nothing short of amazing.
Who is on your team? Who do you need to mastermind with? Who can carry you through?
