The speakers have been\u00a0hired, hotel rooms and meeting rooms are booked, and everything is running smoothly..<em><strong>.until the roof of your hotel collapses \u00a0just days before the convention is scheduled to start!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s exactly what happened to Deb, the meeting\u00a0planner who booked me to speak for\u00a0the Maryland Association of Educational Office Professionals.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure when she heard the news of the roof collapse, there may have been\u00a0a few choice words uttered around her office that rhymed with <em>&#8220;truck&#8221;<\/em>;\u00a0but when the initial shock\u00a0subsided, <strong>she realized that the quality of her\u00a0questions\u00a0would determine the success or failure of the convention.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1329\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1329\" class=\"wp-image-1329 size-medium\" title=\"Motivational Speaker and Meeting Planner in Baltimore, MD\" src=\"http:\/\/theshef.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maryland-Crabs-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"Meeting Planner with Shef in Baltimore\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theshef.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maryland-Crabs-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theshef.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maryland-Crabs.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nothing beats Maryland crabs!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Deb harnessed the power of asking, <em>&#8220;What if&#8230;?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Parents frequently tell their kids, &#8220;You never know unless you ask&#8230;&#8221; The same thing is true with adults, and especially true when you are facing a challenging situation.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What if we could find a property to host our convention in 5 days?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What if that hotel could handle all of our attendees and catering?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Within hours, a nearby\u00a0Mariott Hotel agreed to host the convention and was also able to accommodate all of the guests. Their ability and willingness to &#8220;step up&#8221; created 350 raving fans that week. I also wrote about another Marriott <a href=\"http:\/\/theshef.com\/wordpress\/3-commandments-creating-contagious-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\">creating customers for life<\/a> in a previous post. I&#8217;m not alone in raving about their commitment to customer experiences. My friend, Shep Hyken, wrote this about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyken.com\/customer-experience-2\/watching-and-listening-to-customers-can-help-you-deliver-exceptional-customer-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What are you missing out on because you are afraid to ask, <em>&#8220;What if&#8230;?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While this meeting planner harnessed the power of asking, <em>&#8220;What if&#8230;?&#8221;<\/em> during a time of crisis; I believe that everyone should start harnessing the power of asking powerful questions.
