You remember, the one that was typed and sent in a white #10 envelope and was addressed to &#8220;Dear Neighbor&#8230;&#8221;? \u00a0Of course not. Why? Because lame marketing SUCKS!<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Why do many speakers feel that their message alone will get them booked? Let&#8217;s face it&#8230;you may be an\u00a0<em>awesome<\/em>speaker, but if someone else can out market you,\u00a0they will get the gig! Here are a few deadly mistakes, and tips on how you can avoid them:<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><strong>Mistake #1<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Play it &#8220;Safe&#8221; with your marketing.\u00a0<\/strong>One thing I drill into the heads of every speaker and\/or author that I coach is the importance of being &#8220;Sexy&#8221;. What does your marketing say about you that helps you stand out as an obvious choice? If you tell a ten year old kid what you talk about and they can&#8217;t remember it 30 seconds later&#8230;that&#8217;s a problem. One great resource for you is <a href=\"https:\/\/mach1.infusionsoft.com\/go\/BMSBC\/a3106\/\" target=\"_blank\">James Malinchak&#8217;s bootcamp for speakers<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><strong>Mistake #2<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Only touch the prospect once.\u00a0<\/strong>I can&#8217;t tell you how many speaking events I book <em>because someone didn&#8217;t follow up!<\/em>\u00a0 I personally use the following sequence: 1. Phone call 2. Email 3.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sendoutcards.com\/theshef\" target=\"_blank\">Send a Card\u00a0(Just click on the link to send a free card)<\/a> 4. Send physical mail 5. Follow up again and again!<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><strong>Mistake #3: Talk about you, not the benefits the audience will receive. <\/strong>Do you enjoy sitting next to someone who won&#8217;t shut up about how great they are? Why would an event planner? Keep in mind that a brief bio of qualifications is important, but everything else should be benefit centered. Just imagine a big &#8220;So What&#8221; sign next to every item on your promotional piece, and that will change your perspective.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">You don&#8217;t have to be perfect to book dates. You do have to generate activity, though. Strategically place yourself everywhere your target market is, and watch your calendar fill up!<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">What are some things that you do to keep your calendar full?
