Facebook Smacked Me On the Head!

What do you think of when someone from your high school years sends you a friend request on Facebook? For me, my mind instantly goes back to the fun adventures of our youth or possibly some unique experience from our relationship. While I frequently accept friend requests from people whom I don’t know due to the business which I’m in; when I find someone who triggers a fun memory it brings a smile to my face.

What if you could use the same memory joggers to place you in the same state of mind or feeling with nearly everything? Perhaps it could be a song that reminds you of a romantic night with your spouse and you are reminded of the love which you share. Maybe you smell something that reminds you of your grandmother’s cookies and you are instantly transported to a place of security and youthful optimism.

In business, I like to plant these triggers around me in a variety of places. If I’m going into a sales call, I’m going to turn up some rock and roll and get excited. If I’m paddling on a river that looks like glass, I may have some mellow piano music on my iPod playing. I will complete a gratitude list every morning, reminding me of how truly blessed I am. This provides a great foundation for my day. Tony Robbins talks a lot about the power of state triggers and how they can instantly transport your mind to a completely different place.

Keep in mind that you are in charge of your emotions, not the other way around. If you are finding yourself in need of a little jolt, try putting on some of your favorite music, look at some pictures that make you think of past successes, and invest a few minutes each day focusing on your dream at hand. This technique is a great way to send a “Friend Request” to yourself!
