Fishing for Success In Business and Life

Success in business and life is a lot like fishing.

A successful day fishing or growing your business is about producing results. When you are fishing, you won’t likely see the fish on the end of your line until it is almost in your boat or on the shore. You will, however, feel the tugging on the line reminding you that your fish is still on the line.

Having faith that something is “on the line” keeps you going when times are tough, reminds you that you are moving in the right direction, and encourages you that there is something bigger and better coming.

Successful businessmen and fishermen are known for their ability to tell the story of their “big catch” with great detail (and sometimes exaggeration!). Recalling a past success keeps them going when nothing is biting. Discover the power of replaying your awesome reel of past accomplishments in my previous post.

Since I enjoy catching much more than fishing, I look for other ways to enjoy the gift of the outdoors. (I’d love to see an ADHD fishing tournament…it would last about 6 minutes and no one would catch anything.)

Here are 3 tips to keep in mind when pursuing success no matter how you may define it:

  1. You may need to switch your bait. (email, direct mail, phone, etc.)
  2. You may need to change locations (go where people are buying)
  3. Realize that things are going to get tough along the way, but so what? (My friend, Dan Waldschmidt wrote a fantastic post on this subject).
