Not Just Running Around

I’m getting set to meet up with 4800 fellow runners for the annual Quad Cities Marathon. Having only been a runner for a few years, I first approached the sport with the attitude of, “Running…from what?” Hundreds of miles later, dozens of new friends, bags and bags of ice, and God only knows how many dollars spent in chiropractor bills later; I truly love the sport.

This race is not just about running for 26.2 miles. (I am part of a relay team, as I did not get the proper training miles in.) The race also donates an amazing amount of money to the Us Too Prostate Cancer Fund. Sixty men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the time span that the marathon will be run this morning, and this fund provides the means for which those who cannot afford an exam otherwise can be seen by a doctor. I have had many friends whom have battled a variety of cancers, and while they are all different in the type and severity of the cancer, one thing remains consistent; early detection.

I’m sure I will be writing or doing a video blog later in the day, having enjoyed the rewards of so many people’s hard work and dedication. My challenge to everyone is to find an activity that you enjoy doing, and find a way to make it benefit someone else less fortunate. Giving starts the receiving process, and your legacy will long outlive you.
